The growth rate of clean energy power generation is expected to continue to decline

The growth rate of clean energy power generation is expected to continue to decline Recent data from the China Electricity Regulatory Commission revealed that in November, clean energy power generation reached 74.8 billion kWh, marking a year-on-year increase of 20.3%. However, this growth rate was 28.1 percentage points lower than the one recorded in October, signaling a noticeable slowdown in the sector’s expansion. Hydropower remained the largest contributor to clean energy production, with output rising by 19.4% compared to the previous month. This marked a significant drop of 33.5 percentage points from October's performance, largely due to reduced rainfall during the winter season. In contrast, wind power saw a strong surge, growing by 54.2%—a 14.4 percentage point increase compared to October. Nuclear power also maintained steady growth at 22.9%, though this was slightly lower than the previous month by 4.8 percentage points. Lin Boqiang, director of the China Energy Economic Research Center at Xiamen University, explained that the overall decline in clean energy growth was primarily driven by seasonal factors. With colder weather setting in, hydropower output fell sharply, dragging down the overall growth rate. While wind power benefited from stronger winds in winter, its contribution is still much smaller compared to hydropower. As a result, the overall growth of clean energy is expected to slow further in the coming months, especially if weather conditions remain unfavorable for hydroelectric production. This trend highlights the challenges faced by renewable energy sectors in maintaining consistent growth amid fluctuating natural conditions.
