In the first three quarters of 2012, falling steel prices significantly dented the confidence of traders, leading many to abandon the long-standing practice of winter stockpiling. However, a recent industry forecast from Lange Steel suggests that steel prices could rise by several hundred yuan per ton in 2013, potentially reaching 4,000 yuan per ton. This is considered one of the most optimistic projections for the future of steel prices. With recent price increases observed, some traders who had previously given up on winter storage are now showing renewed interest in the market.
As the year draws to a close, steel traders typically focus on the final push of the current year and look ahead to the next. According to Han Weidong, a senior expert at the Lange Steel Information Research Center, steel prices are expected to rise in the first half of 2013, with an increase of around 300 yuan per ton, pushing prices above 4,000 yuan. Li Wenjie, general manager of Shougang Xinhualian Electronics Co., Ltd., was even more optimistic, predicting that steel prices in April and May 2013 could reach between 4,200 and 4,300 yuan per ton. These positive forecasts have brought a sense of relief to traders who were once uncertain about the market.
The construction steel market typically experiences a slowdown from November to March, as cold weather in northern regions reduces construction activities and steel demand. Traders usually take advantage of low prices during this period, hoping to sell at higher prices after the spring. Earlier this year, many traders were hesitant to stockpile due to fears that the market would remain weak. But as the end of the year approached, favorable policies for the steel industry began to boost prices, signaling a possible recovery.
Yang Jianlong, vice minister of the Development Research Center under the Ministry of Industry, noted that China's steady economic growth in 2013 would lead to increased investment in real estate, automobiles, infrastructure, and power. Additionally, export activity is expected to improve, with rising new orders and purchase indices indicating that companies have largely completed their inventory reduction efforts. As a result, the iron and steel industry is believed to be approaching a bottom and is likely to recover gradually in 2013.
With the steel sector showing signs of warming up, traders are no longer willing to cut back on inventory and miss out on potential opportunities. A senior trader from Linyi Wanshun Steel Co., Ltd., noted that despite the seasonal slowdown, traders are actively buying and increasing their stock. Recent data shows that the company’s inventory has grown by approximately 30% compared to the first half of the year. Meanwhile, increased purchasing activity has further driven up steel prices.
Wang Dejin, general manager of Kingdee, said in an interview: “I believe there will be a noticeable rise in the steel market next spring. Capable traders should not only stockpile during winter but also do so aggressively.†He also mentioned that banks have classified steel trading as a high-risk sector, making it harder for traders to secure loans and causing financial strain. Analysts caution that as winter progresses, the “North-South†market pressure may halt the decline in steel stocks, putting steel prices under renewed pressure. Therefore, traders need to remain cautious and strategic in their decisions.
