In order to calculate the total resistance loss in a pipe network, it is essential to first determine the individual resistance losses for each section of the pipeline. Once these values are known, they can be combined based on whether the pipes are connected in series or parallel. When pipelines are connected in series, the flow rate remains constant throughout, and the total resistance loss is simply the sum of the individual losses (as shown in Figure 2-99). For example, the total head loss H_total equals the sum of the head losses in each segment, such as H_total = Hva + Hvb. On the other hand, when pipelines are connected in parallel, the pressure drop across each branch is the same, but the flow rates add up. In this case, the total flow Q_total is equal to the sum of the flows in each parallel branch (as illustrated in Figure 2-100), meaning Q_total = Qa + Qb. This method ensures accurate calculation of the overall resistance in complex piping systems.
