At approximately 2:30 a.m. Beijing time on May 3, a tragic traffic accident occurred on the Shenhai Expressway near Chenzhou, Hunan Province. The incident took place at the section of 2430KM+900M when a double-decker sleeper bus traveling from Guangzhou, Guangdong to Wenzhou, Zhejiang, veered off the road to avoid another vehicle and crashed through the guardrail into a nearby field. The crash resulted in three fatalities at the scene, two more deaths after being hospitalized, and 11 passengers and drivers injured to varying degrees.
Local road authorities arrived at the scene shortly after the accident. They described a large pink double-decker bus that had overturned in the farmland, with its windshield and windows completely shattered. Over 20 passengers were still inside the vehicle, many of them seriously injured and bleeding. Rescue efforts quickly began as emergency services and local villagers rushed to the location.
In the darkness, passengers were in shock and crying. Flashlights were used to search inside the vehicle, revealing that the original sleeper beds had been crushed, with mattresses and metal frames scattered across the floor. The middle section of the bus, which housed the bathroom, was also severely damaged.
Among the survivors was Mr. Fang and his wife, Ms. Lin, who were unharmed after being examined by medical staff. Mr. Cao, another passenger, recounted how he and three others were sleeping when the accident happened. He said the bus swayed violently as it hit the guardrail, waking him up. Then came a loud crash, and the vehicle plunged into the field.
The bus flipped over, causing people in the upper bunks to fall. Those on the left side of the bus were pushed toward the right, creating chaos. Many panicked, screaming and trying to reach their phones in the dark, but the cramped space and collapsed beds made it difficult for people to move.
As the situation became dire, dozens of villagers from Beiqi Village in Shaxi Town arrived at the scene. Armed with flashlights, they helped break the bus windows and assisted passengers in escaping. Mr. Lin, one of the villagers, said they heard a loud noise and immediately ran out of their homes to investigate. “It should have been high speed,†he said. “We just went to check.â€
Soon after, highway traffic police and firefighters arrived on the scene. Due to the location of the accident, Yunxiao County fire department also sent teams to assist. Upon arrival, they found 26 people had already escaped through the windows, while 13 remained trapped inside the bus.
Firefighters first focused on rescuing the most critically injured, using stretchers to transport them to the roadside and then to a nearby hospital. Meanwhile, traffic officers helped other survivors move to a safe area.
The trapped individuals were mostly located in the front part of the bus. Firefighters used hydraulic rescue equipment to cut through the wreckage and create an entry point. Inside, they found two men—one already deceased, the other severely injured and trapped beneath a deformed bed. After five minutes of intense effort, the injured man was pulled out and taken to the hospital.
Rescue operations continued for over an hour, with firefighters digging through debris and searching for additional victims. In the middle of the bus, two men and a woman were found, but they were pronounced dead upon medical confirmation.
After nearly 90 minutes of work, 10 of the trapped individuals were successfully rescued. Once the site was cleared, cranes lifted the wreckage from the field, and firefighters used specialized tools to dismantle the remaining structure. About 40 minutes later, the bodies of the deceased were removed from the vehicle.
By 7:30 a.m. the next day, the cleanup at the accident site was complete, and the Shenhai Expressway was reopened to traffic. The tragedy has left a deep impact on the community, highlighting the importance of road safety and the critical role of quick response during emergencies.
