A 51-year-old textile worker, Luo Ping (a pseudonym), may no longer have her long hair. On June 15th at around 3 p.m., a strand of her hair got caught in the rotating shaft of a machine while she was working. The accident caused severe injuries, including multiple fractures to her occipital bone and skull base, as well as tearing her left ear into two halves.
On June 16th, we learned from the Central Hospital that Luo Ping has now stabilized after a team of experts provided emergency care.
**Hair Caught in the Machine**
The same day, we visited Luo Ping in the neurosurgery ICU ward of the Central Hospital. She was lying in bed, her face covered with bandages, occasionally letting out faint moans.
Luo Ping, 51, is from Xiangshui Township in Yuhu District and works for a cotton industry company in the city. In addition to being an ordinary worker, she is also a mother of two children. According to a family member, she has always had long hair and usually pins it up when working.
At 3 p.m. on June 15th, during her shift, Luo Ping suddenly felt dizzy. A sharp pain shot through her scalp, and before she could scream, she collapsed in front of the machine and lost consciousness immediately.
“She was always careful and serious. This was just a terrible accident,†said a colleague who witnessed the event.
“I saw her scalp being torn by the machine, and her face was covered in blood,†he added. “The worker nearby saw her ear being ripped apart.â€
With the help of her colleagues, she was rushed to the hospital for urgent treatment.
**Dozens of Hours of Rescue Saved Her Life**
After a quick assessment, doctors performed initial bandaging and immediately began life-saving procedures. Fortunately, all of Luo Ping’s surgeries were completed within the critical six-hour window, which was crucial for her survival.
Chen Jianzheng, director of the Neurosurgery Department at the Central Hospital, explained that the accident caused multiple fractures of the occipital bone and skull base, a full-thickness tear of the left ear, and acute head trauma. After more than a dozen hours of intensive care, Luo Ping has regained some consciousness, and her vital signs are now stable.
According to Chen Jianyao, similar cases occur several times a year. In some instances, these accidents have even led to fatalities. He advised that women working near rotating machinery should avoid long hair and wear safety helmets before entering the factory to ensure their safety.
