Recently, the technology was honored with a special prize and a gold medal at the International Invention Exhibition in Geneva, and it is now expected to enter mass production this year. The nanofiber filter is composed of multiple ultra-thin layers, each embedded with non-woven fabric. This structure allows it to efficiently trap harmful particles such as diesel emissions, laser printer dust, and bacteria, significantly reducing the risk of respiratory illnesses and chronic conditions caused by airborne contaminants. Compared to traditional masks, which only block about 28% of 300-nanometer particles, the new design offers superior protection while using thinner materials. Despite its high efficiency, the cost of production is lower than conventional masks, which could lead to more affordable pricing for consumers. Professor Liang emphasized that the material’s design ensures consistent performance without compromising on quality or comfort. Beyond basic filtration, the mask has additional functionalities, such as antibacterial properties that allow it to remain effective even after multiple uses. It can also convert certain gaseous pollutants into harmless substances, making it a versatile solution for both personal and environmental applications. The same filter technology can be integrated into air conditioning systems and indoor ventilation units, expanding its potential use in various industries. Currently, Professor Liang is in talks with several international manufacturers to bring the product to market. With growing concerns over air quality and health, this breakthrough could mark a significant advancement in protective wear and air purification technology.
