In a recent online post titled "A Water Heater Not Cleaned for Three Years Equals Bathing in Sewage," users sparked a heated debate. The post claimed that neglecting to clean the water heater over time leads to severe issues like scale buildup and rust. According to technical experts, while long-term neglect can indeed cause such problems, the situation isn't as extreme as described. Regular cleaning ensures safe and efficient use.
One user named “Curious Experiment†shared images on a forum, claiming that their three-year-old water heater had turned into something resembling sewage. They showed a series of photos where the water initially appeared clear but later turned murky and reddish-brown, even emitting a foul odor.
To verify the claims, a reporter visited an electrical repair center in Jinan. Engineer Yao Yumei explained that the statement was exaggerated. While electric water heaters can accumulate some scale or rust, most modern models are sealed, so only minimal impurities may mix with the water during use. However, older models with open tops are more prone to rust, and aging pipes can also contribute to internal buildup.
Yao added, “If you deep-clean an old model with a rust remover, the water that comes out might be reddish brown.†She emphasized that modern, sealed water heaters are less likely to rust but can still develop scale if not cleaned regularly.
Scale accumulation is a common issue in pressure-type water heaters. If left uncleaned, the scale builds up around the heating element, reducing efficiency. In severe cases, the heating rod can become completely encrusted, leading to overheating and potential damage. Although most of the scale settles at the bottom, some particles may still flow out during bathing, especially if the showerhead gets clogged over time.
Experts note that the rate of scale buildup depends on water quality. Hard water, which contains more minerals, tends to form scale faster. In Jinan, tap water meets national standards but is relatively hard, making it more susceptible to scaling when heated.
For maintenance, it’s recommended to clean your water heater every one to two years. If your unit has a drain valve, you can perform simple flushing every few months. Some models come with a drainage hose to prevent messy cleanup. Professional cleaning typically costs between 80 to 100 yuan, and it's best to have it done by a qualified technician.
If you're planning to clean it yourself, always make sure to turn off the power first and follow safety precautions to avoid electrical hazards. Regular maintenance not only improves performance but also extends the lifespan of your water heater.
