When it comes to using and maintaining mechanical steering gear, there are several important factors you should be aware of in order to extend its lifespan and ensure safe operation. Here are some key tips: 1. When driving on uneven roads, reduce your speed to minimize the load placed on the steering system. This helps prevent unnecessary stress and wear on the steering gear. 2. Regularly inspect the protective covers on both sides of the steering gear, as well as the upper cover and universal joint shaft. Damaged covers can allow water and dust to enter the system, damaging the grease film and leading to internal corrosion and abnormal wear. If you notice any damage, replace the cover immediately and thoroughly check the steering system before reinstallation. 3. After performing a four-wheel alignment or replacing the steering linkage, make sure that all protective covers are properly installed without distortion. Improper installation can lead to early failure of the seals. 4. Over time, the lubricating grease inside the steering gear may become contaminated or degrade, reducing its effectiveness and increasing wear. It's recommended to perform a full maintenance and lubrication after about 100,000 kilometers. Always start by adding fresh, high-quality grease. 5. The operating conditions of the steering gear can be harsh, so it’s important to use specialized lubricants designed for this purpose. Regular grease may not provide the necessary protection under heavy loads or extreme temperatures. 6. As the steering gear ages, the clearance between components may increase. If the steering wheel has more than 15 degrees of free play, it's time to check the system. If the rack and pinion show signs of abnormal wear, the entire assembly may need replacement. If the issue is just excessive clearance, professional adjustment is required to ensure even force and responsive steering. 7. Avoid having the steering gear serviced at unqualified repair shops with outdated equipment or inexperienced technicians. Poor adjustments can lead to sticking or other serious issues that compromise safety.
