Prevention and treatment of underground pests

In recent years, underground pests—such as alfalfa weevils, cockroaches, tiger beetles, and golden grubs—have become increasingly problematic in mountainous regions. These pests cause significant damage to crops by destroying seedlings and creating bare patches in the fields, which often requires repeated replanting. Due to their nocturnal habits and tendency to hide underground during the day, it's challenging to control them with regular insecticides. According to the **Chinese Pesticide Network**, special formulations are required for effective management. Methyl isoflavin, also known as methyl parathion, is one of the most powerful tools in this regard. Methyl isoflavin is a highly toxic pesticide that works through contact, ingestion, and systemic action against pests. It has broad-spectrum activity, a long residual effect, and can remain effective for over a month. This makes it particularly suitable for controlling underground pests like nematodes in crops such as corn, wheat, peanuts, beans, potatoes, and tobacco. In addition, it is also effective against other pests, including aphids, spider mites, armyworms, tobacco budworms, and fruit borers. Currently, the main formulations of methyl isoflavin include emulsifiable concentrates, granules, and fumigants. To manage underground pests, the emulsifiable concentrate can be diluted and used for seed treatment. For example, 50 ml of 40% emulsifiable concentrate can be mixed with 5 kg of water and evenly sprayed onto 50 kg of corn or wheat seeds using a sprayer. The seeds should be turned while spraying until the liquid is fully absorbed before sowing. Another method involves using the emulsifiable concentrate as "poisoned sand"—mixing 40 ml of the concentrate with 250 ml of water and combining it with 50 kg of fine sand. This mixture is then scattered during sowing or placed directly into the planting holes and covered with soil. The most convenient option is to use the granular formulation. When planting, 1.5 to 2.0 kg of 5% granules can be applied directly into the soil during sowing or placed in the furrow. The fumigant form is primarily used for controlling voles. It’s important to note that **methyl isoflavin is extremely toxic to humans and animals**. Its oral toxicity is comparable to that of methamidophos, while its dermal toxicity is 4 to 5 times higher. Therefore, it should only be used for early pest control in crops with long growth cycles. According to regulations, it is not permitted for use on vegetables, fruit trees, tea plants, or medicinal herbs. Additionally, whether targeting underground pests or other insects, methyl isoflavin must only be used for seed treatment or soil application. Foliar spraying is strictly prohibited, and it cannot be applied within 45 days of harvesting food crops. Always follow safety guidelines and local regulations when handling this potent pesticide.
