The late management of loofah is a good way to keep the seeds and melons

The vegetable farmers typically collect loofah seeds during the later stage of the plant's growth. Usually, after the plants have been seeded, they no longer produce regular loofah fruits. However, it takes about 80 to 90 days from the time the loofah starts developing seeds until they are mature. Cultivating seeds in the last three months can negatively impact the overall yield and profitability of loofah production. By properly managing the plants in the late stage, farmers can ensure consistent production without compromising seed quality. 1. When the loofah enters its planned seeding period, a side vine should be reserved just below the first or second node on the main vine. The main vine is then pruned so that the side vine takes over, continuing the growth and development of new nodes. 2. At least 5 to 6 leaves should remain above the melons on the main vines to ensure sufficient nutrients for seed development. This helps maintain the health and productivity of the plant during the critical seed maturation phase. 3. Side vines should be trained and supported promptly. It’s not advisable to leave fruit on them for more than 15 days after the main vines have been managed. This is because loofah fruit typically matures within about 15 days, and leaving fruit on the side vines could lead to competition for resources, affecting seed development. Additionally, the nutrients produced by the leaves of the side vines can significantly support the growth of the seed-bearing fruits, helping to improve both the quantity and quality of the seeds. 4. During the early stages of the side vine growth, the concentration of anther solution used for pollination should be kept low. A recommended formula includes: 10 ml of quercetin, 6 ml of 2,4-D, 10 ml of naphthaleneacetic acid, 10 ml of flower buds, 12 ml of loofah extract, 20 ml of green source, 1 gram of rotten spirit, and 2 kg of water. The rotten spirit helps reduce nutrient competition and prevents hormone toxicity, which can cause premature aging of the plant. After 80 to 90 days, when the main fruit is harvested, the anther concentration can be increased slightly. For example, adding 2–8 ml of 2,4-D and 10 ml of the fruit solution can further enhance seed development. 5. Although loofah plants have strong root systems, once they enter the seeding stage, their productivity naturally declines. To maintain fruit retention and promote healthy seed development, additional fertilization is necessary. Top dressing can be done through irrigation and foliar application. Combining biological fertilizer with high-potassium fertilizer helps promote root growth, nourish the plant, and sustain flowering and fruiting. Apply 20–25 kg of biological bacterial fertilizer per acre, 15–20 kg of high-potassium fertilizer per acre, or 25–30 kg of potassium sulfate compound fertilizer per acre. Foliar sprays can also be used to supplement nutrients, especially when the plant has high nutritional demands, ensuring that the loofah and its seeds receive adequate nourishment.
