Hyperbolic hole concept

A hyperboloid is created when a straight line rotates around an axis that is not intersecting it (see figure). If we compare one of these lines to the outer surface of a shaft, it resembles the rotation of the shaft inside a hole, with their contact area being a straight line. In theory, similar to a clearance fit between a standard hole and a shaft, the contact remains a line rather than a point. This ensures smooth automatic alignment of the gears during meshing and maintains the full contact length between the shaft and the hole. The concept of "hyperbolic holes" was introduced in the design of planetary gear systems. In foreign designs, the inner hole of the planetary gear takes on a drum-like shape. Instead of a cylindrical inner surface, the busbar is curved with a radius R, allowing the planetary gear to automatically adjust the meshing gap when engaging with the side gear on its shaft. However, since the contact between the planetary gear hole and the shaft occurs only in the middle section, this leads to faster wear on both components. A double-curved hole design can effectively resolve this issue, improving durability and performance.
