On June 1st and 4th, 2013, under the invitation of the Ningxia Foreign Science and Technology Exchange Center, the director of the Japan International Good Neighbor Association, Hachioji, led a delegation of ten individuals. The visit focused on examining the "Ningxia Mulberry Cultivation and Feed for the Popularization and Promotion of Herbivorous Livestock" project, which is part of the Sino-Japanese grassroots friendly technical cooperation initiative in our district. Experts visited several key implementation sites, including Yinchuan Yilin Environmental Construction Co., Ltd., Wuzhonghongsibao Tianyuan Farm, Lingwu Green Source Linmu Professional Cooperative, and Qingtongxia Maofeng Agriculture, Forestry and Animal Husbandry Technology Development Cooperative. On June 4th, the project team held a special symposium where Chinese and Japanese experts reviewed the progress. They agreed that after more than three years of joint efforts, the project had successfully met its objectives.
This Sino-Japanese grassroots friendly cooperation (partner type) project, titled "Ningxia Feed Mulberry Cultivation and Feed for the Popularization and Promotion of Herbivorous Livestock," was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It was implemented starting in July 2010 and lasted for three years. JICA provided a funding support of 50 million yen, while the project was also included in the autonomous region's scientific research plan with an investment of 100,000 yuan.
Since the project began, Chinese and Japanese experts have collaborated on mulberry cultivation, feed development, grassland livestock production, and animal nutrition. Over 50 technical and academic lectures and on-site guidance sessions were held, training more than 1,500 technicians. A total of 12 individuals were sent to Japan for training on three occasions, and over 50 Japanese experts visited Ningxia for guidance.
To date, the project has completed four mulberry feed cultivation and production demonstration bases and one mulberry granule production line. Four mulberry demonstration parks have been established, covering a total area of over 1,200 mu. Four sets of unique mulberry feed formulas and feeding processes have been developed, along with three series of products. Two local standards for mulberry feed processing and modulation technology, two enterprise standards, one patent application, and five research papers have also been completed.
Chinese and Japanese experts have conducted extensive research on mulberry planting, high-quality feed development, and the impact of mulberry feed on the quality of herbivorous livestock meat. This initiative has introduced a new source of high-quality protein feed, improving feed structure and reducing farming costs. The role of mulberry as a protein supplement in breeding has gained recognition from farmers and local agricultural authorities, showing great potential for future promotion.
