During operation, a KOYO spherical roller bearing may exhibit signs of abnormal heat, increased vibration, and unusual noise. These symptoms often indicate that the bearing is damaged and requires immediate inspection and analysis. According to expert analysis, several common types of damage can occur: - **Cracks and Fractures**: These may result from material defects, improper heat treatment, excessive interference fit, or incorrect assembly. If the raceway has grooves, stress concentration can lead to cracks in the ring. - **Electrical Corrosion**: When an electric current passes through the bearing, small sparks can occur, causing localized annealing and creating small pits or dark spots on the surface. Severe cases may result in large pits. - **Spalling**: This occurs when the raceway or rolling elements experience fatigue due to alternating loads. Surface material may flake off in layers, forming pits over time. Misalignment between the bearing housing and shaft centerline can also cause uneven loading and early fatigue. - **Cage Damage**: Especially in high-speed bearings, the absence of proper lubrication can lead to wear between the cage, rollers, and raceways. This may cause the cage to crack or break. - **Wear and Contamination**: Poor sealing allows dust or foreign particles to enter the bearing, leading to scratches, excessive wear, and increased vibration and noise. - **Indentation**: Hard particles entering the bearing can create indentations between the rolling elements and raceway. Excessive impact loads can also cause plastic deformation and pitting on the contact surfaces. - **Corrosion**: Exposure to moisture, acids, alkalis, or salts—either directly or through contaminated lubricants—can corrode the bearing components. Even minor corrosion can render a bearing unusable.
