Electric Power Institute successfully solved the problem of gas filling in lithium titanate batteries

On April 18th, the “Synthesis Technology Study of Submicron Lithium Titanate Energy Storage Battery Materials” undertaken by the China Electric Power Research Institute passed the acceptance of the State Grid Corporation of China. The project solved the problem of gas expansion in lithium titanate batteries by studying the synthesis and doping modification of submicron lithium titanate materials.

As the most promising energy storage battery, lithium-ion batteries have great potential in the large-scale energy storage market. As technology advances and manufacturing costs drop, lithium titanate batteries will become the mainstream lithium-ion battery system for large-scale energy storage applications. However, titanium dioxide on the surface of lithium titanate material catalyzes the decomposition of the electrolytic solution to produce gases that will cause the lithium titanate battery to flatten, and the gas expansion rate will be about 25%. The flatulence of the battery will shorten the battery life and affect the application safety. To realize the large-scale application of lithium titanate batteries, this key issue must be resolved.

China Electric Power Research Institute started with lithium titanate materials and studied sub-micrometer lithium titanate materials. It used elemental doping technology to modify lithium titanate materials to reduce their surface catalytic activity and inhibit the occurrence of gas expansion side reactions. To achieve the purpose of inhibiting battery flatulence. The project carried out research on different synthesis technologies of submicron lithium titanate materials, developed raw material pretreatment solid-phase synthesis method and electrospinning synthesis method for submicron lithium titanate materials, and studied the modification technology of submicron lithium titanate materials. Sub-micrometer lithium titanate doping modification and surface coating technology have been developed to solve the problem of gas expansion in lithium titanate batteries due to the catalytic activity of tetravalent titanium ions on the surface of lithium titanate materials.

The trial-produced 15Ah lithium titanate battery based on modified sub-micron lithium titanate material has been predicted by the authority to have a battery life of 15,418 times; after circulating at a temperature of 55 amps for 30 cycles at a charge and discharge current of 30 amps, The rate of flatulence is only 11.2%, which improves the safety of the battery and promotes the industrialization and practical application of the energy storage technology led by the State Grid Corporation of China.
