World home furnishing giant IKEA enters Foshan

IKEA, the global home furnishing giant, has made a significant move into Foshan with an investment of approximately 1 billion yuan. The company has chosen Qiandeng Lake as the location for its new store, marking a major step in its expansion strategy in South China. The IKEA (China) Investment Co., Ltd. recently acquired a commercial site spanning around 30,000 square meters in the A24 block of Guicheng Street. This strategic location is expected to host an IKEA home shopping mall, which will require an investment of about 1 billion yuan. The mall is anticipated to open as early as 2017, bringing a new retail experience to the region. According to the Nanhai District Land Exchange Center, the land was purchased at a base price of 380 million yuan. Located within the Guangdong Financial High-tech Service Zone C, the site is situated near Guilan Road and close to the Qiandeng Lake Metro Station. With a construction area of at least 50,000 square meters, the new IKEA store is expected to attract a wide customer base due to its convenient transportation links and proximity to major cities like Guangzhou, Chancheng, and Shunde. A local official from Zone C mentioned that negotiations with IKEA began over a year ago. The decision to locate the store in Nanhai was influenced by the area's strong consumer power and strategic location. Being just a 30-minute drive from Guangzhou and other nearby cities, the site offers great potential for attracting shoppers. Another factor influencing IKEA’s choice was the expiration of the lease at the Guangzhou Tianhe IKEA Pavilion. This led to the decision to establish a flagship store in Nanhai, covering the broader Guangfo and Zhao areas. The news of IKEA’s arrival in Nanhai was first announced through the company’s official Weibo account, sparking excitement among locals. Many Foshan residents expressed their delight, saying they would no longer need to travel to Guangzhou to shop at IKEA. Younger generations, in particular, showed more enthusiasm for the new development. While many are excited about the arrival of IKEA, local furniture manufacturers have taken a more cautious approach. Zhong Haizhou, assistant to the president of the Federal Group, noted that while IKEA’s presence could be beneficial, the two markets may not overlap significantly. He explained that IKEA primarily targets young consumers, such as recent graduates and newlyweds, who often prefer one-time purchases or rentals. In contrast, Foshan’s furniture companies cater to more mature customers with long-term home-buying needs. Yang Zhihua, Secretary General of the Lecong Furniture Association, believes that IKEA’s arrival could serve as a positive addition to the local industry. He suggested that Foshan-based companies could collaborate with IKEA to expand their product offerings. Despite the potential benefits, Zhong remains cautiously optimistic. He pointed out that IKEA has strong bargaining power due to its global supply chain and procurement capabilities. For Foshan’s furniture manufacturers, the key is to find ways to cooperate without being relegated to low-end production.
