Recently, the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Committee conducted a comprehensive evaluation of 17 mask samples, including two purchased from physical stores and 15 from online retailers. These products were sent to the Shanghai Municipal Labor Protective Products Quality Supervision and Inspection Station for testing on key performance indicators such as filtration efficiency, total leakage rate, inspiratory resistance, and expiratory resistance. The results revealed that two of the samples failed to meet the required standards, raising concerns about product quality and consumer safety. Filtration efficiency is one of the most critical factors in determining a mask's effectiveness. It measures the percentage of particles that a mask can block under specific conditions. According to the test results, seven samples achieved a filtration efficiency above 90%, indicating strong protection. However, eight samples performed poorly, with filtration efficiencies below 50%. One sample had an alarming filtration efficiency of just 6.5%, which means it offered minimal protection against airborne particles. In addition to filtration, the resistance during inhalation and exhalation plays a significant role in user comfort. Masks with lower resistance levels are generally more comfortable to wear for extended periods. When comparing masks with similar filtration capabilities, consumers should prioritize those with reduced inspiratory and expiratory resistance for better usability. Out of the 17 samples tested, two were too small to be evaluated for resistance levels. The remaining 15 samples showed a wide range of resistance values: inspiratory resistance ranged from 26 Pa to 274 Pa, while exhalation resistance varied between 21 Pa and 119 Pa. This variation highlights the importance of selecting masks that not only provide adequate protection but also ensure a comfortable breathing experience.
