In response to the rising concerns over haze and the bird flu outbreak, 3M masks have become a popular item this year. However, what many people may not realize is that some of these masks could be not only ineffective but potentially harmful. According to the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau, since May this year, police from Shanghai and nine other provinces have jointly dismantled 18 illegal production, sales, and storage sites of counterfeit 3M masks.
Earlier this year, the Fengxian Branch of the Public Security Bureau received a report from an authorized 3M agent about the widespread sale of fake 3M masks on Taobao. After an initial investigation by the Economic Crime Division, more than 300 online stores were identified as suspects in selling counterfeit products. For instance, the popular 8210 model mask typically sells for 8–9 yuan per piece in legitimate stores, but on Taobao, some shops sold it for as low as 1.4 yuan. In certain specialty stores known for counterfeit goods, genuine and fake masks were often mixed together, making it nearly impossible for consumers to tell the difference.
The investigators focused on seven of these online shops and purchased 30 masks from each. All of them were confirmed to be counterfeit. According to 3M (China) Co., Ltd., these fake masks had significantly lower filtration efficiency and offered minimal or no protective function compared to national standards. Additionally, the filters used in these counterfeit masks emitted strong, unpleasant plastic odors. Not only did they fail to meet the national requirements for "non-toxic, odorless, and non-allergic" materials, but they also posed serious health risks to users.
Shanghai police revealed that the internet has become the primary channel for selling these fake 3M masks, with prices far below market value. Some shops selling masks for just 2–3 yuan are almost certainly selling fakes. During the investigation, a major production and storage site was discovered in a residential area in Shenhe District, Shenyang. The company involved, Baowei Kangfu Insurance Products Co., Ltd., was found to be one of the largest operations, with a total value of the case reaching as high as 26 million yuan.
As the demand for protective masks continues to rise, it's crucial for consumers to remain vigilant and purchase from trusted sources to ensure their safety and health. Always check for official certifications and avoid suspiciously low prices that may indicate counterfeit products.
