How to detect the adhesion of paint

How to detect the adhesion of paint:

Paint is one of the most commonly used materials in home decoration. Despite the wide variety of wall coverings available today, many people still prefer paint because it is cost-effective and offers flexibility in color and design. In this article, we’ll walk you through how to accurately assess the adhesion of paint. If you're unsure about the process, read on!

How to judge the adhesion of paint?

A. Start by using a utility knife or cross-cutting tool to create a grid pattern on the painted surface. The cuts should go all the way down to the base layer. The horizontal and vertical lines should be spaced so that they form 100 small squares, each measuring 1mm x 1mm.

B. Next, brush the surface with a soft brush, moving towards the corners of each small square. Clean up any loose particles, then apply a piece of adhesive tape over the cut area and carefully lift it off. The tape should have an adhesion strength between 350-400g/m².

C. After removing the tape, use a magnifying glass to examine the grid area for any signs of paint lifting or peeling.

D. Finally, refer to the standard test results to determine the level of adhesion.

Paint Adhesion Test Standards

The main criteria for evaluating paint adhesion are based on the amount of topcoat or coating that is removed by the tape and the percentage of the grid affected. There are five levels of adhesion rating:

A, ISO rating: 5 = ASTM rating: 0B

This indicates that more than 65% of the paint has peeled off.

B, ISO rating: 4 = ASTM rating: 1B

Some of the squares are partially or completely peeled off, with a peeling area ranging from 35% to 65%.

C, ISO rating: 3 = ASTM rating: 2B

This means there is partial peeling or large areas of paint lifting along the edges of the cuts. Some squares may be completely removed, with a peeling area between 15% and 35%.
