HID Global publishes a practice survey of customer access control systems

The survey reflects the need for organizations to upgrade access control. Only 37% of users perform annual security assessments, and most users do not hire third parties to test their existing access control systems. This means that the user does not perform their own security audits, does not conduct intrusion training internally, or does not test their own systems at all.

More than 50% of respondents did not upgrade their systems last year, and more than 20% of respondents did not upgrade their systems in the past three years.

75% of end users consider password protected cards to be important. In addition, most respondents believe that magnetic stripe cards and proximity cards provide adequate security even though magnetic stripe cards and proximity cards are easily replicated.

Seventy-five percent of respondents said that state-of-the-art security technology is important or very important, but half of the respondents said they did not implement these technologies better or did not implement them at all. More than 90% of respondents believe that most security policies are important or very important, and only 70% of respondents believe that they implement security policies effectively or very effectively.

The biggest obstacle to implementing best practices is the budget and the value of the investment that management has not seen. According to the Bonimon Institute, the cost of not investing in best practices can be prohibitive—for example, a data breach that resulted in a $5.4 million loss.

HID Global believes that the current perception of access control will have an impact on the adoption of future technologies. For example, mobile access on a smartphone provides users with a more accessible access control experience, and users can place all their credentials in a secure device that they care for and that are not easily lost or forgotten. However, if the market continues to postpone strengthening its best practices to address current threats with traditional cards and readers, it will be difficult for enterprise infrastructure to seamlessly migrate to use intelligence in a self-contained device environment full of new security threats.
